Marathon Launch Day Preparation Guide: Everything You Need to Be Ready

March 4, 20265 min read

Marathon Launches March 5th — Here's How to Prepare

Marathon goes live worldwide on March 5th at 10:00 AM Pacific across Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Whether you're a veteran from the server slam or completely new, this guide covers everything you need to know to be ready for day one.

Global Launch Times

Marathon is launching simultaneously worldwide. Here are the key regional times:

RegionLaunch Time
Pacific (PT)10:00 AM, March 5th
Eastern (ET)1:00 PM, March 5th
GMT / UTC6:00 PM, March 5th
Central European (CET)7:00 PM, March 5th
Japan (JST)3:00 AM, March 6th
Australia (AEDT)5:00 AM, March 6th

There is no early access — this is a global launch for everyone. Since Marathon is an extraction shooter, giving a subset of players early access would create unfair advantages and fragment the player pool.

Preloading Is Available Now

Pre-loading is available on all platforms. Head to your platform's store and download Marathon before launch to ensure you're ready to go the moment servers go live.

Fresh Download Required

The launch build is approximately 18 GB and is entirely different from the server slam build. If you played the server slam, you must delete the old version and redownload from your platform store.

What's Included at Launch (Season 1)

Season 1, "Death is the First Step," includes a massive amount of content:

Runner Shells (6 at Launch + Rook)

All six launch shells are available from day one, including the new Thief shell that wasn't in the server slam:

  • Destroyer — Tank class, high survivability
  • Assassin — Stealth and flanking specialist
  • Recon — Intel and scouting focused
  • Vandal — Disruption and area denial
  • Thief — New shell, speed and loot acquisition
  • Triage — Team healer and support
  • Rook — Unique drop-in role (join in-progress, nothing to lose)

Zones (3 Launch Maps)

  • Perimeter — Available at launch, the most accessible zone. PvP frequency has been adjusted based on server slam feedback, with an additional team being added
  • Dire Marsh — Available at launch, more dangerous and complex
  • Outpost — Unlocks the day after launch (March 6th) and requires Runner Level 12. This delay gives the community time to gear up before entering one of the more treacherous zones

Weapons & Gear

  • 28 weapons spanning all categories (ARs, SMGs, shotguns, marksman rifles, LMGs, sidearms, and more)
  • Full mod, implant, and core systems to craft builds
  • Earnable cosmetics and achievements through gameplay

Factions

All six factions are available with full contract and progression systems:

  • CyberAcme
  • NuCaloric
  • Traxus
  • MIDA
  • Arachne
  • Sekiguchi Genetics (new at launch, wasn't in the server slam)

Additional Features

  • Full Codex for story and lore discovery
  • Cross-play and cross-save across all platforms
  • Console players need an active online subscription (PS Plus / Xbox Game Pass Core) to play

Server Slam Rewards

If you participated in the server slam, your rewards will roll out during the first day of launch. It may take some time for them to reach your in-game mailbox, so don't panic if they're not there immediately on login.

Reward Tiers

Level ReachedReward TierGear Quality
Level 10Tier 1Green (Uncommon) gear
Level 30Tier 2Blue (Rare) gear

If you reached level 30 in the server slam, you'll be starting with some solid blue-tier gear right out the gate — giving you a significant head start on day one. Just be careful not to lose it in your first few raids.

Don't Miss Your Rewards

You must log in before Season 1 concludes to receive your server slam rewards. If you don't log in during Season 1, you will not receive them.

Twitch Drops — Launch Weekend (March 5–9)

A new set of Twitch drops is available during the launch weekend. The window is tight — only from March 5th at 10:00 AM PT through March 9th.

How to Earn Twitch Drops

  1. Link your Bungie.net account to your Twitch account
  2. Watch Marathon streams in the Twitch directory with drops enabled
  3. Claim each reward from your Twitch inventory
  4. Log into Marathon to receive them in your mailbox

Tau City Cup Drops (March 14th)

A second round of Twitch drops will be available during the Tau City Cup on March 14th — a tournament event pitting creator teams against each other. More details to come from Bungie.

Post-Launch Content Roadmap

Not everything is available from day one. Here's when additional content unlocks:

Week 1

  • Day 1 (March 5th): Full game launch — Perimeter, Dire Marsh, all shells, 28 weapons, all factions
  • Day 2 (March 6th): Outpost zone unlocks (requires Runner Level 12)

Second Half of March

  • Ranked Mode goes live — competitive playlist with skill-based matchmaking
  • Cryo Archive zone unlocks — the endgame zone aboard the UESC Marathon ship. The community will need to "unlock the way into orbit," potentially through a community event or in-match progression through Outpost

What We Know About Cryo Archive

Based on the launch cinematic and community speculation, reaching Cryo Archive may involve fighting through Outpost to earn passage to the Marathon ship. The archive is located on the ship itself, and reaching it could involve:

  • Becoming the last surviving team on Outpost
  • Teleporting to the Cryo Archive aboard the Marathon ship
  • Dealing with the Compiler (boss encounter) inside

This could echo Bungie's legacy of community-driven events like Destiny's Corridors of Time and Niobe Labs puzzles.

Day One Checklist

Here's your quick-reference checklist to make sure you're fully prepared:

  • Preload Marathon from your platform store (fresh download, not the server slam build)
  • Link Bungie.net to Twitch for drop eligibility
  • Clear your schedule — servers open at 10:00 AM Pacific on March 5th
  • Prepare for potential login queues — launch days can be busy. Follow @BungieHelp on Twitter/X for server status updates
  • Join the official Discord for real-time community updates
  • Claim your platform weapon charms (PlayStation players need to visit the PS Store)
  • Set up your loadout plan — review our Weapons Database and Shells Guide to decide your starting build
  • Start on Perimeter — it's the most forgiving zone for learning the ropes

First Day Strategy

Start on Perimeter with cheap loadouts to learn the maps. Save your server slam reward gear until you understand the extraction points and common PvP hotspots.

Tips for Your First Day

  1. Don't rush Outpost — it unlocks on March 6th and requires Runner Level 12 for a reason. Spend day one learning the core loop on Perimeter and Dire Marsh
  2. Budget your loadouts — don't bring your best server slam reward gear into your first raid. Learn the maps with cheap loadouts first
  3. Complete faction contracts — they're the fastest way to level up and earn rewards
  4. Play in a squad — trios have a massive advantage in extraction shooters. Use the Discord LFG if you don't have a team
  5. Insure valuable items — if you find something rare, insure it before your next raid
  6. Watch for Twitch drops while you play — have a stream running in the background to earn cosmetics during the March 5–9 window

Good luck on Tau Ceti IV, Runner. See you out there.
