Marathon Zones Guide

Marathon features four distinct zones on Tau Ceti IV, each with different difficulty levels, extraction points, enemy types, and environmental hazards. Knowing the maps is essential — extraction shooters reward map knowledge above almost everything else.

Perimeter — Start Here

Perimeter is the most accessible zone and where every new player should begin. It features the highest number of extraction points (10), making it the safest zone for learning the core gameplay loop.

Key Features

  • Most forgiving zone for new players
  • Highest extraction point density of any map
  • Moderate PvP frequency (adjusted post-server-slam with an additional team added)
  • Good variety of loot without extreme danger

Extraction Types

  • Crew Exfil — Standard extraction for your full squad
  • Guarded Exfil — Extraction points defended by AI that must be cleared first

Environmental Hazards

  • Scan drones that can reveal your position
  • Tripwires in corridors and doorways
  • Standard UESC AI patrols

New Player Strategy

Spend your first several runs exclusively on Perimeter. Learn the extraction points, loot spawns, and common PvP hotspots before moving to harder zones. Use Rook mode for zero-risk exploration.

Dire Marsh — Danger Zone

UnlockAvailable at launch

Dire Marsh is a step up in difficulty with more teams, fewer extraction points, and dangerous environmental hazards. The Lockdown event spawns here, offering massive gear upgrades.

Key Features

  • Higher PvP density with 6 teams
  • Environmental hazards are more lethal
  • Home to the Lockdown event (major loot opportunity)
  • Complex layout with multiple elevation levels

The Lockdown Event

High-Value Event

Lockdown is the most rewarding event in the game but extremely dangerous. Come prepared or don't come at all.

Lockdown spawns between 15-20 minutes remaining on the match timer:

  1. Requires the green antivirus consumable to enter the red force field safely
  2. Find the keycard nearby and insert it to start the event
  3. Complete the lockdown three times in a row for maximum rewards (it respawns at different locations)
  4. Have Triage share antivirus via medbots to the whole team for efficiency
  5. Don't be inside the zone when the event starts — the initial activation will kill you

Environmental Hazards

  • Ticks — Parasitic creatures that attach and deal damage over time
  • Birds — Hostile fauna that swarm when disturbed
  • Scan drones and tripwires (same as Perimeter)

Outpost — High Stakes

UnlockMarch 6th (Day 2) — Requires Runner Level 12

Outpost is the most dangerous standard zone. Fewer teams but far fewer extraction points create intense competition at every extract. The best loot spawns here but so does the highest risk of losing everything.

Key Features

  • Highest-value loot spawns in the game
  • Only 5 extraction points creates intense chokepoint PvP
  • Requires Runner Level 12 to access (ensures players have baseline competency)
  • Potential gateway to the Cryo Archive endgame

Strategy

  • Never go in without a plan — know your extraction route before you start looting
  • Destroyer's energy barricade is essential for holding extraction points
  • Watch for other teams camping extracts — this is the #1 ambush point
  • If loaded with loot, play passive and extract early rather than risking another fight

High Risk Zone

Outpost has the fewest extraction points and the best loot. Every squad will be converging on the same exits. Do not enter without full gear and a squad.

UnlockSecond half of March — Community unlock event

The Cryo Archive is Marathon's endgame zone, located aboard the UESC Marathon ship itself. The community will need to collectively unlock access, potentially through progression in Outpost.

What We Know

  • Located on the Marathon ship in orbit above Tau Ceti IV
  • Features the Compiler — a boss encounter inside the archive
  • May involve raid-like PvE puzzles and challenges
  • Only 2 extraction points, making it the most dangerous zone
  • Access may require becoming the last surviving team on Outpost and teleporting to the ship

Speculation

Based on the launch cinematic and Bungie's history with community events (Destiny's Corridors of Time, Niobe Labs), reaching the Cryo Archive could involve:

  • Fighting through Outpost to earn passage
  • A community-wide progression event to "unlock the way into orbit"
  • Dealing with the Compiler boss inside the archive

General Zone Tips

  1. Always have an extraction plan before you start looting high-value areas
  2. Listen for audio cues — footsteps, gunfire, and ability sounds reveal enemy positions
  3. Use the ping system aggressively to mark enemies, loot, and objectives for your squad
  4. Budget your loadouts per zone — use cheap gear on Perimeter, save your best for Outpost
  5. Learn extraction timers — extractions have windows; missing one can leave you stranded
  6. Rook is your map teacher — use Rook mode on any zone to learn layouts with zero risk

Zone details will be updated as Cryo Archive unlocks and Bungie adds new zones in future seasons.
